Acrylic Gouache on wood
18cm x 14cm
When I started this painting, I just wanted to make a pretty painting. And halfway through painting this, I attended a seminar about the topic of beauty. It opened my mind to newer ways of looking at beauty and, much to my surprise, distorted my view on it. Continuing this painting of simply a “beautiful” woman didn’t seem right anymore.
I learnt about how deeply rooted the patriarchy and beauty standards are, and just being aware of that has made me a little more comfortable about what I see in the mirror.
Regarding the painting now, since my view of beauty was now abstract and slightly distorted compared to the black and white I thought before. I decided to paint the subject as such.
