“Ghar banaana” {to make a home}
60cm x 90cm
Mixed media on canvas
I made this painting when I was feeling nostalgic. When people walk into my room, they often say it’s crowded or that I have a lot of things. I thought about it and I realised I like to surround myself with pieces and memories from my home back in India. That home is the people that I love. I wanted to make work that brought what I felt to life with a lot of pieces from India, like the prints and colours, but also have objects from my life. Like the slippers, converse, palette, pencil pouch, etc. I grew to learn that materials play such an important role in painting, especially when I make them myself or buy them from back home. Which is why I used a piece of cloth I bought in India with my parents to use as curtains. A piece of home sewn into the painting :) The reason this painting is named “ghar banaana” is because I realised I pack my room with trinkets to make it feel more comfortable and make it my own home.
